She is the daughter of mother Julie Hale and father Preston Hale. Hale has a sister Maggie Hale, and a step-brother Wes Hale and a step-sister, Kirby Hale. She attended Cordova Optional School.

Hale had been in a relationship with actor David Henrie from January 2007 to March 2009. She also dated actor Alex Marshall from October 2010 to 2011, and actor Chris Zylka from January 2012 to January 2013. Later, she began a relationship with musical artist Anthony Kalabretta in June 2015 and the duo split in May 2017.
