Spencer is the daughter of mother Carolyn von Seelen and father Richard von Seelen. She studied at Garden City High School and then she joined Pennsylvania State University.
Spencer began dating real estate broker David Haffenreffer in 2000 and the couple got married on 30 September 2000. They have a son Duff Haffenreffer and a daughter Katharine Paige Haffenreffer. The couple divorced in 2015. Later, she started dating entrepreneur Richard McVey in 2016 and they tied the knot on 1 September 2018.
Lara is well known for being the co-anchor for the Chat show Good Morning America, and she began her career on television as a host in the television show Antiques Roadshow in January 2014. She also hosted ABC News and The Early Show.
